How to Edit Maps

Hello, ljanderson997. I noticed that you edited File:International reaction to the 2008–2009 Israel–Gaza conflict.png. I've been trying to figure out how to edit maps like that. What do I do?

This is how you edit on Microsoft/ Windows not Apple/ Macs. View the map on its large resolution instead of it been minimised. Then copy and paste it on to Microsoft Paint (or other program, but I believe paint ot be easiest/ paint). Then use the paint bucket to fill in the country in the appropriate colour. Then save the map/ file as the exact same name it is saved on wikicommons, for example save File:International reaction to the 2008–2009 Israel–Gaza conflict.png as "International reaction to the 2008–2009 Israel–Gaza conflict.png" (without "File:", also make surer you have the correct case, so lower and higher are not mixed up). Also when you save the file, save it as a PNG file as opposed to a JPEG ect. Then go back to the image on wikicommons, then go to the bottom of the page and it will say "Upload a new version of this file", click that and follow the on screen instructions. This should work. That is how you edit PNG files, other files such as SVG you edit differently, you need special software such as inkscape, however that another ballgame, I'm not good at editing them. PNG are the easiest, to edit/ create. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. It seems confusing but its much easier than it first seems. How do you know, that the colours of the Liechtenstein flag as drawn by me are "far too bright"? I had sketched my rationale on the file's discussion page. Anyway, a problem with the colours could be solved (after a proper discussion, I'd suggest) by editing the drawing and not by reverting! As also mentioned, the crown needed a lot of reworking, and now closely follows the law; this is, IMHO, slightly more important than colour issues.--Mevsfotw (talk) 17:41, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Visa requirements

Good day! I am writing to you regarding the visa requirements map for Australian citizens. I must say I am personally against including disputed regions and autonomous territories or colonies to visa requirements maps. Firstly because they are usually so tiny it's impossible to add them without creating confusion. Then there are all sorts of other complications, many of these regions have nearly the entire population also holding a passport of the mother country (regardless of the disputes). Also most of the disputed regions do not have full control over the entire claimed territory (if at all), whether it's Israeli settlements in West Bank, North Kosovo or 99% of Western Sahara it's the same issue. There is also a very important issue of real world effective control, certain regions, such as Western Sahara might or might not have the claimed control of the immigration matters. And so on and so on. However you decided to include them in the map of visa requirements for Australian citizens. It is a nice test to see how it goes, I am fine with including them. But we can't cherry pick which regions to include and most certainly we can't do it based on the position of the Australian government regarding the status of such regions as that has zero effect on whether those regions de facto impose or don't impose visa restrictions on Australian citizens. The fact that Australia doesn't recognise Abkhazia will not help the Australian passport holder in the slightest to use a Georgian visa to cross into Abkhazia. But I think you confused that map with that of the Australian visa policy. However even then you made a mistake, Australia is one of the countries that do not diplomatically recognise State of Palestine yet you included it in the map when you said you were making the map that includes only entities recognised by the Australian Government. So I hope this little mistake of yours explains to you how complicated these things can get and why it is perhaps for the best to avoid them.
